Here at the iPhone App Review, we really like inventive games with unique concepts. Sadly, we just don’t see too many of them. It’s a real shame, but that doesn’t mean we can’t throw the occasional puzzling gem your direction! Today’s offering is exactly in that category, and it’s called World Wonderland: Rivers Mahjong (Ourshow Games). The game provides a refreshing twist on an age old classic, as well as a wealth of new additions to keep the pot enriched. For our full review, you need only to slid on down below the break, as well.
Concept and Gameplay
If you’re familiar with the rather ancient Four Rivers Mahjong tile game, then you have a pretty good grasp on how World Wonderland works. Essentially, the player will need to line up and match a variety of picture-emblazoned tiles to beat each individual level. To complete the course, they’ll need to match up the gold tiles, which supply cash. They can perform a variety of matches dictated by straight lines and such—the game explains all this, so we’ll gloss over it.
The important bit to remember is this: By matching up these tiles quickly and gaining cash (and points) you then get to build your own mini resort. Furthermore, it’s a resort constructed out of portions of the world. In other words, it’s like playing Sim City and Mahjong at the same table. It’s a unique mix, and one that’s further enhanced by the powerups the user “digs up.” As you complete buildings with your money, you’ll be rewarded with game changing items to keep things fresh. All in all, it’s a fantastic mix, and one that’s quite addictive if we say so ourselves.
Graphics and Design

Even better still, the app looks quite nice on the iPhone. It’s got a cartoony style that we like quite a bit, and the interface—unlike a lot of games in the genre—could not be simpler to mangle into place. We loved how quickly we could build new units, or even how simple it was to match up our tiles in-game. Overall, its clear the developers have made an effort not to muck up the works with complicated setups, and the end result is simply pitch-perfect.
Overall Value
The game itself is free in the App Store, but if you’d like to flesh it out with the full content, you’ll need to pony up two bucks. Still, for that asking price, you’re going to get an entire mountain of tile-based gameplay. If you enjoy the free trial, like the concept, and want more, we promise you won’t be disappointed with the price of admission. At the end of the day, this is a great new puzzle game, and it earns a solid recommendation from us.
